TEACHER RESEARCH: MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN MUSIC EDUCATION?
One-day Symposium
Saturday 1st November 2008

Hosted by: Cambridge University Press, the Faculty of Education of the University of Cambridge and the Open University

In the current context of government initiatives promoting new views of professionalism and practice, we are learning that research which is grounded in actual classroom practice is crucial to teacher change. Equally, eliciting, documenting and codifying practice through teacher research is becoming a central aspect of professional development. However, the extent to which teacher research helps to explain development of innovative practice, remains uncertain. The purpose of this one day symposium is to: (a) celebrate the 25th anniversary of the British Journal of Music Education (BJME) and (b) share, support and encourage 'Teacher Research' (one of the missions of the journal).

Keynote and invited speakers include:

  • Graeme Sullivan (Teachers College, Columbia University, USA)
  • John Finney (University of Cambridge)
  • Pat Cochrane (CapeUK)
  • Tim Cain (University of Southampton)
  • Michael Tymoczko (Stanground College, Peterborough)
  • Fiona Sexton (Flegg High School, Norfolk)
  • Alex Baxter (University of Hertfordshire and Windsor Boys’ School).

Key Questions

This symposium will focus upon the following key questions:

  1. What are the effective frameworks, models and designs for teachers to research their own practice?
  2. In what ways are music educators using the findings from research to improve music teaching and learning?
  3. What are the problems associated with pedagogic change and development in the current professional and political climate?
  4. What difference is teacher research making?
